Health
For more than 160 years, local government has made a substantial contribution to the health of the nation. For example, in 1999-2000, the Australian public sector spent $931m on public health. Of this, $225m or 24%, was spent by local government.
ALGA undertakes a range of activities related to health.
Public health
ALGA is a member of the National public health partnership. The partnership provides a multilateral inter-governmental framework between the Commonwealth and state/territory health authorities and ALGA to protect and improve the health of Australians.
Food regulation
ALGA is a member of the Australia New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council. The Council is primarily responsible for the development of domestic food regulatory policy and the development of policy guidelines for setting domestic food standards.
Rural health
The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), the Australian Local Government Association of Australia (ALGA), the National Farmers Federation (NFF), the Country Womens' Association of Australia (CWAA) and the Association of Health Consumers of Rural and Remote Australia (HCRRA) have produced a collaborative policy statement concerning the most important factors influencing the future provision of health services to Australia's rural and remote communities.
