Financing facts
State funding to local governments
The state and the Northern Territory governments offer a variety of grants to local government for specific purposes and services. Determining the amount of funding provided is difficult as not all states provide information in their budget papers. Further, the only consolidated data available is that provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The following table (created using ABS data) outlines the state and territory funding dollars per capita that are given to local councils. However the data is not particularly pure as some state governments include contract payments to councils to carry out state activities rather than grants to councils for council activities.
Information on Australian Government funding to local government is available at Federal Budget Analysis 2005-06.
