Natural resource management

Natural Heritage Trust

In 1997 the Australian Government launched the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT). A second phase of the program (NHT2) was launched in 2001, with funding allocated until 2007-08. The Australian Government has also established the National Action Plan (NAP), a seven year program to tackle salinity issues.

What is it?
The Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) was set up by the Australian Government in 1997 to help restore and conserve Australia's environment and natural resources. Under the Trust, councils, community groups and organisations have received funding for environmental and natural resource management projects.
How can councils participate?
Councils need to become involved in their region. If they do not, priorities in local and regional plans may not match and councils are less likely to leverage further funding for the many NRM programs and activities they already undertake.
Facilitator network
There are currently 7 facilitators employed by and hosted within local government associations around Australia.
