National General Assembly of Local Government

The annual meeting of the National General Assembly of Local Government (NGA) will take place this week in Canberra with more than 700 mayors and councillors from across Australia attending.

ALGA President Cr Geoff Lake will chair the Assembly which will feature national leaders and experts and will include debate on a number of motions submitted by councils such as calling on the Federal Government to: improve settlement services for migrants, to fund community and public transport initiatives and to set up a dedicated climate change adaptation fund for local government.

Speakers at the conference include:

  • Tony Abbott, Leader of the Opposition;
  • Anthony Albanese, Minister for Local Government;
  • Penny Wong, Minister for Climate Change;
  • Warren Truss, Shadow Local Government Minister and Leader of the Nationals;
  • Bob Brown, Leader of the Australian Greens; and
  • O'Brien, ABC 7:30 Report presenter.

ALGA's election document, 'A 10-Point Plan: National Resilience - Local Communities' and the 'Local Roads and Transport Agenda 2010-2020' will be launched on Tuesday. The popular annual 'State of the Regions' report to be launched on Wednesday and will focus on housing affordability. The Assembly will include sessions on constitutional change, climate change adaptation, the National Broadband Network, women in politics and a panel discussion with Press Gallery journalists. The NGA will be followed on Friday 18 June with the Australian Council of Local Government (ACLG) meeting of local government leaders with the Prime Minister and ministers.
