Australian Transport Council
The Australian Transport Council is a ministerial forum for Commonwealth, state, territory and local government consultations and provides advice to governments on the coordination and integration of all transport and road policy issues at a national level.
- Productivity Commission inquiry into road and rail freight infrastructure pricing

- Ministers were briefed by the Chair of the Productivity Commission, Gary Banks, on the Commission's discussion draft on road and rail infrastructure pricing. Ministers noted that the draft raises significant issues for Governments to consider. They encourage interested members of the public and the transport industry to examine the report closely and to provide feedback to the Productivity Commission.

- Australia's transport ministers and the President of ALGA met on 2 June to consider a range of issues including surface transport security, rail safety, airport land development, the national transport reform agenda, the national road safety strategy and safety at railway level crossings.

The recent terrorist attacks in Bali and London provide a timely reminder of the need to remain vigilant and strengthen further the security of Australia's transport systems. In this light, Australian Transport Ministers welcome the COAG decisions of 27 September and reaffirm their commitment to taking action that further secures Australia's transport systems. - National rail safety regulation reform

Ministers considered and agreed in principle to a range of policy reform objectives for nationally agreed model rail safety legislation. The policy proposals will provide for the first time, the basis for a nationally consistent approach to rail safety regulation across Australia. - Transport security

The Council is encouraged by the progress of jurisdictions in relation to various transport security initiatives. It was acknowledged that it is necessary to build on this progress, particularly for those parts of the transport sector identified as carrying a higher risk of being the target of terrorist activities. - Transport security

Ministers were briefed by the ASIO Director General Dennis Richardson on the current security environment and the threat to our transport systems. The Council was also briefed on the outcomes of the high level mission on international transport security led by the Secretary of the Department of Transport and Regional Services. The mission, consisting of Australian and State Government representatives, visited a number of countries and reported on best practice in transport security including current international thinking on regulation, planning and operational practices to maximise transport security.
